OUR SUGGESTIONS

When we travel in Madagascar, it is better to carry light luggage and the essential. This will allow us to have more space for souvenirs in our luggage on your return. The tee-shirt is the clothing for excellence. Short sleeved shirts and shorts are very suitable to the climate and the tropical heat. A long-sleeved shirt and pants sometimes light will allow us to protect us from mosquitoes, in the evening hours. The nights are cool on the Central Highlands: sweaters and jackets are needed only during the winter (June to August). A sweet shirt, or a light jacket, are absolutely sufficient for all other periods of the year: suggested a light blanket for night travel. Jeans and cotton trousers and a k-way for rainfall are very practical. During the rainy season, a waterproof jacket is recommended. For trekking and walks do not forget your shoes: Rangers, Pataugas and tennis will be useful also in the forest. On the coast: swimsuit, sandals or flip-flops are absolutely indispensable. Certain things are particularly useful for comfort, especially for those who want to go hiking in the forests. A small backpack for the trips by “taxi brousse” (the typical local public transport) and for walks, as well as a good torch with spare batteries and bulbs are needed for night walks, for camping, or during a visit to a local village which usually does not have electricity. You can also protect your photo or video equipment from moisture and heat. Delicate skins are exposed to the blazing sun burns in the regions of the coast and in the southern part of the island. Needed sunscreens protection (10 and more). Sunglasses and hat may also be useful. Important: don't forget insect repellent for mosquitoes: on-site, the essence of citronella is sold in pharmacies, supermarkets. Adventurers for hiking and trekking, camping mattress, a winter cover, a Swiss knife, a flashlight, an isothermal waterproof bottle, a first aid kit will make your life easier. If you are travelling as part of a organized circuit, bring campingmaterial without loading too much. For specific tasks, look for places where there are specialized structures or clubs to practice your passion. The locals know very well their region, they will advise you and you will not need to bring from home your material: diving, snorkel, fishing. Bring your material only if you intend to practise your sport independently, climbing material and hunting, for example. For the safety of your luggage during the transportation, lock your suitcases and put a padlock on your bags. You can find practically everything in Antananarivo, without needing to bringanything from home. Don't lose time in supermarkets but visit the markets where you can find useful things for your travel and accommodation: raffia hats, baskets, wicker, sarong, shirts. Malagasy inland: the main mean of transport is the "taxi-brousse" which is also an ideal way to discover the landscapes and meet people. Travel may last several hours depending on the distances, weather conditions, the roads, tracks or even on the vehicle. Madagascar coasts: several boats and ferries provide national links to Nosy Be, Mahajanga, Sainte Marie, etc… and international links to Mayotte and the Comoros. Avoidcrowded boats and the Cyclone season. To reach Nosy Be: by air: direct flight from Antananarivo, Diego Suarez, Majunga (and all the major cities of Madagascar via Antananarivo) and Mayotte and Reunion. Via boat from Mahajanga. Via road: from Diego Suarez, and later crossing via ferry from Ankify (a small town on the coast opposite the island). For the adventurers an access is possible on the street from Antananarivo and then Mahajanga, duration from 2 to 5 days according to weather conditions.
